how to speed up your blog 10X

Hey, what’s up everyone. Thanks for coming back!

In today’s article we are going to discuss how to speed up your blog 10X so your site loads lightning fast and you have a better user experience.

One of the keys to having a successful blog is to have a speedy and lightning-quick site.

No one likes a slow & sluggish site. It’s annoying and your visitors will leave just as quickly as they came.

Not too mention a slow site affects your search engine rankings on Google. If you are not aware, Google factors in your site speed when it determines the rankings in their search engine.

Most people don’t realize that they need a fast loading blog to stay competitive and if they know this, they have no clue what to do to speed up their blog.

Believe me, if you have a fast blog you will lower your bounce rate and your visitor retention time will grow.

You will also get more signups, more shares on your posts and overall your blog will grow to new heights.

So without further ado let’s discuss a few ways you can speed up your blog 10X!

Install a Caching Plugin

A caching plugin serves a static version of your site to visitors, so if they come back again, they won’t have to wait for scripts and files to load, which shaves off a few seconds (or milliseconds) from your loading times.

Simply put, your site loads faster for returning visitors.

The plugin I recommend is WP Super Cache.

It has over 2 million downloads, regularly updated and it’s FREE.

It’s also very easy to install and setup. Perfect for beginners that don’t want to break the bank on getting a more advanced caching plugin.

Remove Plugins that You Don’t Use

Plugins can inflate your site and slow your blog down to speeds you will be disgusted with.

How this happens is that plugins create additional files that ends up increasing your blog’s load time.

Every once in a while you should look through your plugin list and completely remove the ones you don’t use.

Removing unused plugins will help speed up your site so your visitors will have a better user experience.

Move to a VPS Server

Moving your blog from shared hosting to a Virtual Private Server(VPS) will dramatically increase your blog’s speed.

The reason why shared hosting is so cheap is because you are sharing a web hosting server with hundreds of other sites.

Sharing the same server with hundreds of other sites will slow down your site because there are limited resources available and every site is trying to hog resources for themselves.

With a VPS Server, there won’t be as many websites on the server.

Also, your website is sectioned off so you won’t be sharing resources with anyone else. This also leads to increased speeds for your blog.

The only downfall with hosting your site on a VPS is that it can be a bit more expensive than shared hosting. Plans are usually between $25-$35 a month.

So decide carefully if you really need to scale up to a VPS before you make the move.

Compress Your Images

Little do you know, images can slow down your blog significantly.

There is a way to make the file size of an image smaller without degrading the quality.

You should consider installing a FREE plugin called “Smush” to decrease the file size of the images on your blog.

Smush will strip unused data and decrease the file size which in turn will speed up your blog.

Use a CDN

A CDN (Content Delivery Network) is a group of linked servers spread globally which works in tandem to provide extremely quick delivery of websites.

Sites load at different speeds depending where the site visitor is located in the world and where your web hosting server is located.

For example, if you live in New York and you are accessing a site who’s physical server is located in New Jersey, you will experience fast loading times and speed because you are nearby to the server.

On the other hand, if you live in New York and you are accessing a site who’s server is located in Australia, you will experience slower times because the distance is greater between you and the web server.

Without going into too much technical jargon, if you get set up on a CDN your site will load much quicker to users around the world because your site will be stored on a server close by to them.

There are plenty of CDN providers to choose from that are reliable and have a good reputation. Here is a shortlist of CDN companies you can look into:

  • Beluga CDN
  • Akamai
  • CDN77
  • Cloudflare
  • MaxCDN

Bonus: How to Check Your Site Speed

It’s always a good practice to check the speed of your blog periodically to see what areas can be optimized for performance gains.

The Website Speed Test Tool I use is called Pingdom.

How it works is that you enter your site’s URL & select a server you want to test from.

When you start the test, it is going to run a diagnostic on your site and let you know how fast your load time is, pagesize, and and give you a rundown on your overall page performance. It will also let you know what areas need improving.

You should check it out and run a speed test on your blog to see how you can improve it’s speed.

That’s all for now folks. I hope you learned a few ways on how to speed up your blog 10X.

Implement these tips and watch your blog load at supersonic speeds! (well maybe not at the level of supersonic, but you get the point 🙂 )
